Review and Giveaway: Street Boners (3 Winners!) (CLOSED)

Through my membership with The Product Review Place, I was given an opportunity to review a hilarious, off-the-wall book: "Street Boners" by Gavin McInnes. Yes, "Street Boners" is the name of this book. Don't worry, it's not quite as risque as the title may make it sound. But while this review is suitable for all ages, I must note right off the bat that this book is not safe for work (or children). There are profanities and inappropriate photos, which makes this book best suited to parents who need a break from kiddie stories (or any mature individual who wants a good laugh!).

Street Boners is all about the bold fashion statements that have been spotted on the streets. Every page has photos of fashion mishaps and triumphs, along with a rating of one to ten kittens. Yep, kittens. The fewer kittens, the worse the outfit. I have no idea why they chose to use kittens in their rating system, but I like it - this quirky choice fits in well with the whole feel of the book. Besides, who doesn't love kittens, am I right?

The guy in neon spandex gets just two kittens. Are you afraid to see the guy who only gets one kitten?

I've had such a great time flipping through the pages of this book. It's so interesting to see the crazy outfits that some people pick out for themselves and wonder what on earth was going through their heads as they stood in front of the mirror that morning. I love that this book includes a brief description of each outfit, because it helps put them into perspective, and also because the descriptions themselves are often just as funny as the outfits in question! As an added bonus, also included throughout the book are commentaries by well-known comedians and celebrities, including Chloe Sevigny, Debbie Harry, Fred Armisen, and Tim & Eric. The only thing I really don't like about this book is that it seems to focus way too much on the author drooling over pictures of "hot" girls - we get it, McInnes, you are attracted to stereotypical, scantily-clad women. Other than that, though, it's a fun book to relax with, and you will definitely get some giggles out of it.

Yep. This is what a one-kitten rating looks like. Yikes.

It's also worth noting that this book is physically well-constructed. The pages are thick and glossy, with rich color photographs on every page. Thanks to this book's sturdy binding, I haven't had any problem whatsoever with pages falling out, as I have experienced with certain other books in the past. The book is a nice and big (but not too big), and it's the perfect size for displaying on the coffee table (if you're bold!).

Book to pencil size comparison.

Overall, I love this book! It has made me laugh out loud numerous times, and it's a lot of fun to flip through its pages and have a good chuckle. I'd recommend it to anyone who is not easily offended!

Buy It!
You can purchase Street Boners on Amazon.com for a suggested retail price of $18.99 (however, as of this post, it's on sale for just $12.91! Score!).

Win It!

Please feel free to grab the TTA button for your blogroll to help bring more bloggers to this blog hop!

Tuesday Tag-Along button art adapted from the "Follow the Leader" illustration by Diana Jones. I encourage you to visit her at her blog, Sketch & Jones, and her online shop to see more great illustrations and all sorts of wonderful crafts!

Without further ado...
Here's how it works:
  • Create a new Tuesday Tag-Along blog post. Include the Tuesday Tag-Along button by copying and pasting the code above. (You are also welcome to copy and paste these instructions in their entirety, or any portion of this Tuesday Tag-Along blog post!)
  • Add your blog name and the URL of your TTA post to the MckLinky below.
  • Follow Twee Poppets, the hostess blog listed in the first slot. Twee Poppets will follow you back! (Note: If you want Twee Poppets to follow you back, you MUST leave her a comment saying that you are a new follower and leave a link to your blog!)
  • If you can, please follow the blogs in the three slots before you (e.g., if you're number 20, follow numbers 19, 18, and 17). This is not mandatory, but it will help ensure that everyone who signs up gets a few new followers!

The MckLinky will be open to add your blog until 11:59pm Tuesday night. You then have all week long to visit blogs and return follows!

Review: Crazy Coupon Mommy

Through my membership with Business2Blogger, I was introduced to the most fabulous coupon blog: Crazy Coupon Mommy!

I am so glad I found this website! Jeana from Crazy Coupon Mommy has tons of coupons listed - it seems that she posts multiple coupons almost every day. There's always a new deal out there in the couponing world, so it's nice to see that she stays on top of things! She also includes a brief description with each coupon link, and I really appreciate having a little info about the deals, so I don't have to go all the way to the advertisers site to find out if it's really something I'm interested in.

With all the coupons she posts, you might think it would be pretty darn tough to find what you're looking for - but not so with Crazy Coupon Mommy! All the coupons and deals are categorized by type (e.g., printable, online deals, rebates, etc.) and store, including weekly coupon match-ups from stores like CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid, Target, and more. Just choose your category from the drop down menus at the top of the page and you're good to go! Or if there's a particular coupon you're looking for, Crazy Coupon Mommy offers an amazing searchable coupon database! With the database, all you have to do is type in a keyword for what you're looking for (a particular product, store, website, etc.) and click the "search" button - voila! There are even advanced search options that make it very easy to narrow down your selections.

But despite the name, Crazy Coupon Mommy isn't all about coupons. Not even close! There are tons of other features to explore on Jeana's site. One of my favorites is her freebies section! Jeana has compiled a huge list of available freebies and samples, both in general categories and baby-related categories. I love that she has a special section for baby-related freebies, because I can't think of anyone who could make better use of freebies than parents! What I love about her freebies lists is that she actually takes the time to maintain them! Jeana checks every link before she posts it to make sure that it works and is not a scam. She also updates every week, crosses out expired deals, provides helpful tips, pays attention to what hear readers have to say about the samples, and provides some useful links. Now that is dedication!

Of course, another aspect of her site that I love is the reviews and giveaways portion! There are some great giveaways listed...but what's even more exciting is what Jeana has planned for this section! She is having an enormous giveaway promotion for the month of July, with a new giveaway every day that month! Holy smokes! And these aren't puny little knickknacks, either. There will be lots of high-value prizes, including the new Flip Slide HD. In fact, the value of all the items will reach a combined total of over $5000! I can't tell you how excited I am for this event!

There is truly something for everyone on Crazy Coupon Mommy. In addition to the coupons, freebies, reviews, and giveaways I've already mentioned, this site also offers sections for recipes, various tips and tricks, crafts, ways to earn money, music, and so much more. I would highly recommend this website to anyone looking to find some great deals and save a little money!

I discovered this review opportunity on business2blogger.com. I was paid $15 to write this review. I was NOT required to write a positive review. This post includes my own honest opinions ONLY.

Happy Winners! 6/23/10

Today, I was so pleased when I opened my inbox and found the following email, from the winner of my Aw-KinaSew'N giveaway that ended a short while back:

"Hello Chelsea,
You may remember me as the winner of your Awkina Sewn contest from some weeks ago. When I won, I chose the cloth activity book item from her shop on etsy. It came in the mail recently and i love it so much! I don't have a blog of my own, so I cant blog about what I won but I really feel the urge to spread the word about my prize, so I was wondering if you could share a little something for me?
I was so impressed with the book, it was even better than it looked in her shop! Its obviously homemade but I think that makes it really charming and quaint, and it would be the best gift ever for a young child. There's so much to learn and explore! Each page has an activity that is really good for developing skills, like there is a shoe to tie, a little man to dress, a button to button, a clock with moving arms, and even more! I was really impressed with the quality and content, there should be way more toys like this! I think Keisha should focus on putting more of these cloth books in her shop and everyone should buy one for the kids in their life!
I want to thank you for doing the giveaway on your blog. I dont know where you found her, but I'm really glad you introduced her to me because I LOVE MY PRIZE!!! =)
 Have a good day Chelsea
 From your happy winner!
"

Isn't that wonderful? Reading this email really brought a smile to my face! I'm so happy that she loved her prize so much! I, like her, would definitely suggest you visit Aw-KinaSew'N on Etsy! It doesn't appear that Keisha has any cloth activity books listed at the moment, but you can always contact her through Etsy to inquire about one. I'm sure she'd be delighted to hear from you!

Recently, I also received links to posts from two lovely giveaway winners who had pledged to blog about what they won (as an extra entry option). It's now my pleasure to share these with you! I'll post snippets of what they wrote, then leave you the link so you can hop over to their blogs and read the full versions, if you're so inclined. :)

Jackie from 3 Little Ones was the winner of the Sweet as Pie Creations giveaway, and she won $10 to spend at the sponsor's wonderful Etsy shop. Here's what she had to say:

"Awhile back I was lucky enough to win a $10 Gift Card to Sweet As Pie Creations Etsy shop (an awesome etsy shop featuring hair clips & bows for little girls) from Twee Poppets Review & Giveaway.  I have 2 little girls, so I'm sure you can imagine I was very excited about this! . . ." [Read more here!]

Cari from This Little Family was the winner of the Sewn by Sarah giveaway, and she won her own Nerdling bib. Here's what she had to say:

"My daughter is a Nerdling...and she has the bib to prove it! [Photo] I won this cute bib over at Twee Poppets! She was hosting a giveaway that was sponsored by Sewn By Sarah. Everyone should definitely check them both out! . . ." [Read more here!]

I've so enjoyed hearing from my winners! I encourage you all to take a moment to enter my current giveaways  - maybe you'll be the next Happy Winner!

Review and Giveaway: OCEAN Complete Sinus Irrigation (CLOSED)

Through my membership with The Product Review Place, I was given the opportunity to review the OCEAN Complete Sinus Irrigation System. This product is a unique two-in-one nasal irrigation and nasal moisturizing system, designed to help relieve pressure, congestion, dryness, and discomfort of the nasal passage. Believe it or not, I was actually a little excited when I caught a cold recently, because I was dying to try this product out!

OCEAN Complete Sinus Irrigation System is somewhat similar to a neti pot, but the method of use is quite different. This product is a sterile, pre-blended saline mixture contained in a pressurized metal bottle with a nozzle tip for easy application. Included is a special streaming nozzle (orange tip) for irrigation, and a nasal mist applicator (white tip) for moisturizing; there's also an optional wide tip adapter to provide added comfort and prevent the tip from being inserted too far into the nasal passage. Simply insert the tip just inside the nostril and press down - then hold the nozzle down for a full one to three seconds and feel the saline spray cleanse and moisturize your nasal passage! No more mixing, dripping, or cleaning up after a messy neti pot!

Sure, it's simple to use, but does it work? For me, the answer is a resounding YES! I used this product when I had a bad head cold and a majorly stuffy nose, and I felt immediate relief. My nasal passages were clearer and I found that I could breathe much better right away. After a while, my nose plugged up again (as noses so often do during a cold) but it wasn't a problem, because the OCEAN Complete Sinus Irrigation System is nonmedicated, nonaddictive, preservative free, and safe to use as often as needed! I just repeated the process each time my nose became stuffy and enjoyed the relief this product brought me.

Overall, I have been very pleased with the effectiveness, safety, and convenience offered by the OCEAN Complete Sinus Irrigation System. It is an excellent way to help with the discomfort caused by allergies, congestion, dry nose, nose bleeds, sinus surgery, oxygen treatments, and more. I would recommend this product wholeheartedly!

Buy It!
OCEAN Complete Sinus Irrigation System is available at Walgreens, Rite Aid, Costco, and Drugstore.com for a suggested retail price of $14.99 for a 6 fl. oz. canister. OCEAN also offers a variety of other products, including Premium Saline Nasal Spray, OCEAN for Kids, Ultra Sterile Saline Nasal Mist, and OCEAN Gel.

Review and Giveaway: Twigs and Tweets (CLOSED)

Recently, I had the chance to partner up with Teresa from Twigs and Tweets to host a review and giveaway here on Twee Poppets. I'm very excited to feature Twigs and Tweets on this site, because it is an absolutely fabulous shop. Before we go any further, let's learn a bit more about Teresa.

Please introduce yourself and your shop.
My name is Teresa and my Etsy shop is Twigs and Tweets. I am a stay at home mom of two little boys.

How did you decide on your shop name? What does it mean?
I really wanted my shop name to apply to both boys and girls. I choose "Twigs" for  the boys and "Tweets" for the girls. I also love nature and birds so that had a little to do with picking my name.

How did your business get its start?
I have been sewing all my life. Before I was married I worked at my grandmothers quilt shop sewing quilts as my job. When I found out about Etsy I researching what items were desired and discovered the softness of minky fabric. Sewing is just a hobby that I have always enjoy. When I had my boys, there really weren't any cute baby things for boys. I wanted to find cute fabric for boys. I wanted to see if I could sell my creations and it has just taken off better then I ever thought it would. I also discovered all the fun fabrics that I could make my creations with.

What is your personal favorite item in your shop?
I love my ribbon blankets and my crinkle crackle toys. I also love my pacifier clips. They came about when I noticed that every pacifier clip on Etsy was basically the same. I wanted mine to be different cute and universal. I thought other sellers were making them too complicated by adding loops to the end. My pacifier clips are cute and have tons of personality.

What is your favorite crafty activity? Are there any particular crafts you'd love to learn?
I love to applique on baby quilts. I would love to learn how to paint.

What do you love to do? What makes you smile?
Of course since I am from Utah me and my husband are huge ski freaks. We also love to kayak but I wont lie - it scares the be jeezes out of me.
Is there anything else you'd care to share with us?
I really try to keep my prices low so that people can afford them. It is hard to find quality products at a reasonable price. I also love custom orders.

Teresa sent me one of her wonderful crinkle crackles to review. A crinkle crackle is a soft fabric square (approximately 8 inches across) that makes a crinkly noise when handled. Babies love them! The front is made from the 100% cotton "Apples and Pears" fabric by Alexander Henry. All the light blue, bright green, red, light pink, white, dark brown, and bright yellow colors found in the print keep things bright and cheerful. It's a very fun pattern, and the apples and pears are just adorable. It makes me smile just to look at it! The back of the square is made from incredibly soft minky dot fabric in a coordinating light pink shade. I love anything with minky fabric, because it's pretty much the softest thing in the world - I can't keep my hands off of it. My poor cat doesn't get the attention he deserves when there's minky around!

Poor Bowser...

The best part of this item is the crinkly noise it makes! Most babies absolutely love things that crackle, like plastic bags - but this product is a much safer alternative to plastic bags, which pose a huge suffocation hazard. Teresa packs plenty of crinkle crackle material into the square, so there's a ton of noise with every little movement. It doesn't require much effort at all to make the noise, which is great for babies who don't have a lot of coordination yet - they can still learn about cause and effect without having to be so precise or forceful. It's really satisfying to hear lots of crackling when handling the square, so it's nice to see that Teresa didn't skimp on the crinkle crackle material. In fact, she's packed so much into that square that it doesn't even lay quite flat!

Filled with lots of crinkle crackle material!

To top it off, this item is very well-made - a must for any product that will be in the hands of a baby! The cloth is nice and thick, and Teresa has securely sewn it all the way through from front to back. A little one could bend, tug, twist, and chew on this crinkle crackle, and it would still stay in one piece. But there is no sacrifice of form in the name of function - the square is sewn with a decorative top stitch that really adds the cherry on top! The only minor issue I've had with this product is that when I sprayed it with water (as Teresa suggested) to remove the wrinkles, some of the colors on the Apples and Pears fabric bled just a tiny bit. This is not a huge problem, as it's barely noticeable (especially now that it's dry), but  I wonder if it could be solved by pre-washing the fabric before assembling the square.

Decorative top stitching.

The crinkle crackle from Twigs and Tweets is the perfect sensory toy. It really is a feast for the senses! The sense of sight is stimulated with the bright colors and bold pattern of the Apples and Pears fabric; sound is stimulated with the abundant crinkling sound that is so easy to trigger, even for the youngest babies; and touch is stimulated with the super soft minky fabric, the bumpy dots on the minky, and the crumply feeling of the crinkle crackle material. This would be a terrific toy for a child with Sensory Processing Disorder, or for any baby who is working hard to learn about the world around him!

Buy It!
You can purchase a crinkle crackle just like this one, as well as ones with various other patterns, at the TwigsAndTweets Etsy shop for just $5! Teresa also offers lots of other items for great prices, and I'd encourage you to take a peek!

Win It!
Teresa has generously offered to make one US or Canadian winner a custom crinkle crackle toy with ribbons and a universal pacifier clip attached to it. She will send the winner pictures of possible fabric selections, or the winner can choose from any of the fabrics already listed in her shop. Review and Giveaway: Amaria's Paper Work (CLOSED)

I am thrilled to say that I've been given an opportunity to review a full set of magnetic wooden paper dolls by Amaria's Paper Work! Before I get into details, let's get to know Amaria a bit better.

Please introduce yourself and your shop.
Welcome to my shop, which has two main sections- Wooden paper dolls, and magnetic Bible stories. I am a primary school teacher (currently on family leave) and mother of two pre-school children, who test out all my products before I list them. (Not the actual ones for sale, of course- we try to keep them away from sticky fingers!)  My husband, who teaches technology and design, is a great help and support.

How did you decide on your shop name? What does it mean?
I’m absolutely hopeless with what is normally called “paperwork”, the kind that involves scissors, glue and scraps of paper being much more my style! So “Amaria’s Paper Work” it became. (The “s” is a slip of the keyboard that I can’t change!)

How did your business get its start?
I remember making paper dolls with my mother as a child - drawing them on stiff card, and then tracing them to make all sorts of clothes. As a mother myself now, and as a Christian, I often lament the lack of wholesome, non-commercial stuff available for children. So when my sister recently got out some paper dolls I'd made for my niece some time ago, and suggested there might be a market for them, I started thinking... A friend told me about Etsy...and here I am!

What is your personal favorite item in your shop?
I enjoy making each item, and the latest is usually my favourite!

What is your favorite crafty activity? Are there any particular crafts you'd love to learn?
I have always loved dabbling with paint, paper, scissors, glue, clay… anything fiddly and messy!   Digital photography is a more recent interest, even it doesn’t make a mess.  I am not a fabric and yarn person!

What is your greatest accomplishment thus far?
Looking back I can think of many things I’ve been privileged to do, but I don’t view them as accomplishments- rather as opportunities God has given me to serve Him!  I think the greatest of these is motherhood.  I am in awe daily of the great responsibility of this task, and thankful for the joy my children bring me in so many ways!

Amaria sent me a complete "family" of her wonderful dolls. There are six children in all. Elise is the oldest, at almost ten; Ben is second, at seven years old; then comes Mandy, at nearly five; next is Tommy, at age three; and finally, the twins, Sam and Sally, who are just one year old. Amaria includes not only the ages of the dolls, but also little mini-biographies, detailing their favorite activities, colors, animals, etc. This is a great way to add depth to these characters, and I think it would be fun for children to learn more about the dolls they're playing with.

Each doll comes in its own zip-close plastic bag with a paper insert that includes a picture of the doll and its clothing, the web address for the Amaria's Paper Work Etsy shop, the names and pictures of the other dolls in the family, and the mini-biography I mentioned. I love that this info is all in one place and is included right in the bag with each doll, as it really helps to keep things organized.

The design of each doll is printed on matte photo paper, based on Amaria's original hand-painted artwork. The designs are realistic-style cartoons that remind me of those found in advertisements from the 1950s. Cute! They are all magnetic on the front, for easily attaching and removing their outfits, and also on the back, for attaching to the fridge or other such surfaces. I am using the twins as fridge magnets as we speak!

Can you spot Sam and Sally?

Close-ups of the lovely artwork on the dolls' faces.

I have been truly impressed at how well these dolls are made. They are constructed of 1/8 inch craft wood with a magnetic strip sandwiched between the layers, then coated with several layers of varnish to protect them from sticky little fingers. They're really solidly constructed, and it's clear that they will be able to withstand years of play! A toddler could bang them together, a rambunctious little boy could get a little too rough, or a doting young girl could carry them everywhere she goes, and these dolls would be just fine. The same goes for their clothing; it is made of thick paper that has been completely laminated, so it will be waterproof and very resistant to tearing, bending, marks, and dirt.

There are a few very minor imperfections with my set of dolls. For example, the clothing occasionally doesn't quite match up perfectly with the outline of the dolls, leaving a tiny portion of the doll exposed where the clothing would normally go, or covering a small amount that it shouldn't. However, such flaws do not at all impact play - and in fact, if anything, I think they actually add to the handmade charm of these dolls!

Here, her dress is a little too high up on the right side and a little too far down on the left. No matter how I tried, I couldn't get it to lay quite right. Just a minor imperfection!

Each doll comes with the "summer basics" collection, which features three different outfits: a casual everyday outfit (shorts and a t-shirt), a more formal outfit for special occasions, and a pair of light summertime pajamas. Each child includes two pairs of shoes, both casual and formal. Underneath their clothing, they also have painted-on swimsuits, which not only helps to keep them family-friendly, but also functions almost as a bonus fourth outfit!

Amaria also sells various sets of clothing individually in her Etsy shop, which can be used to dress up the kids for different times and occasions, such as autumn, winter, weekdays, school, sleepovers, etc. It would be so wonderful for a child to have several different sets of clothing for their dolls, especially since many of the pieces can be mixed and matched! For young children or developmentally delayed children, a parent could even use these clothing sets as a learning tool, by asking the children to identify which outfit would be appropriate for the doll to wear to a certain occasion. With the wide variety of doll clothing Amaria offers, a parent could teach a child about lots of different situations! She also plans to introduce more sets as time goes on, so keep your eyes peeled for new additions.

Amaria has big plans for her line of wooden paper dolls! Since I received my set, she has added a similar set of African American dolls - and she also plans to introduce a whole line of multicultural dolls. This would be an excellent way to teach your child about racial and cultural diversity, and a great jumping off point for a conversation about how our differences should be celebrated!

Overall, I have been extremely pleased with my set of wooden paper dolls from Amaria's Paper Work. They're sturdy, well-made, adorable, and a terrific learning tool. I just know that you and the children in your life would love these dolls, too, which is why I'm excited to announce that Amaria has agreed to sponsor a giveaway here on Twee Poppets!

Buy It!
You can buy the complete family of dolls that I received for just $38 at the Amaria's Paper Work Etsy shop. She also offers the individual dolls, a set of African American dolls, magnetic Bible stories, and lots of additional clothing sets.
