Several weeks ago, I came across the darling bibs in the PrismSunshine Etsy shop, and I immediately knew I wanted to review one. I wrote Alison about sponsoring a review, and was delighted to hear that she was interested! Before we get started, let's learn a little more about Alison.
Please introduce yourself and your shop.
Hello there! My name is Alison and I run the Etsy shop prismsunshine. Currently my shop contains a variety of handmade baby bibs.
How did your business get its start?
My business spawned from making baby themed items for my friends and family. After shopping for baby shower after baby shower I found that I couldn’t find exactly what I was looking for in stores. I figured that there had to be a lot of people out there like me, who wanted some kind of custom, unique design, but didn’t want to pay a fortune.
What is your personal favorite item in your shop?
I love the sushi baby bibs. Making the appliqués for each bib is by far my favorite part. Each appliqué is lovingly made by hand, so no two are ever identical. I’m really pleased with how this design turned out.
What is your favorite crafty activity? Are there any particular crafts you'd love to learn?
My favorite crafty activity varies a lot. Currently I’ve been on a big knitting kick. I’ve been experimenting with lining knit projects with fabric and appliquéing onto knit blankets and scarves. Next I’d love to learn how to crochet.
What do you love to do? What makes you smile?
When I’m not working at my day job as a lab scientist, or crafting away in my some of my spare time; I love to garden. I bought my house last May and have been steadily working on replacing all the lawn at my house with landscaping. I’m also super excited to have my own vegetable garden this year.
Alison sent me her Bacon and Eggs baby bib to review. I'm just going to come out and say it: I've had experience using a ton of bibs, and this is easily one of my favorites. I knew I loved it as soon as I opened the package!
First of all, is this not the cutest thing you have ever seen in your entire life? Look at the little bacon strip! And the tiny little egg! And the sweet yellow and green fabric background! I love it all. This is a truly stylish bib that any little one would look fabulous wearing. The green and yellow fabrics are bold, cute, and modern all at once, and the solid brown strip across the middle really helps tie it all together. Even the pearly snap closure is appealing. But the real stars of this show are definitely the bacon and egg appliqués - they're what really sets this bib apart. I love the thought of a tiny baby clamoring for a hearty breakfast of bacon and eggs. It makes me chuckle. How many bibs can do that for you, huh?
Aside from being aesthetically pleasing, this bib is well-made and well-designed - definite must-haves in a baby bib! It is sturdily sewn (it passed my tug test with flying colors) and made of double-layered fabric, which is great for both durability and absorbency. While it's certainly not thin or flimsy, the material isn't super thick or absorbent (like terrycloth, etc.), so it's really nice that Alison made sure to double up to help increase its effectiveness. (In this next photo, I have pulled apart the front and back of the bib to show that there are two layers.)
The snap closure takes a little force to snap and unsnap, which I love, because it makes it just that much trickier for a mischievous toddler to undo and pull off, while still being easy for a parent to unsnap. I've experienced the annoyance of an older baby unfastening bibs with Velcro closures over and over and over again, and it gets old fast. It is so much pleasanter to have a hefty snap like this and a baby that can focus on eating, instead of removing his bib!
I've saved the best for last: the most wonderful feature of this bib is its front pocket. From the brown strip down is an extra portion of fabric that acts as a "pocket" for food. When the bib is on, this extra portion of fabric naturally falls forward, creating a nifty little catch-all for falling food. This is perfect for keeping baby's pants clean and dry!
I highly recommend this bib, and any bib from PrismSunshine! Take a peek at a few of the other great designs Alison offers:
